Fly No Filter
Only When Its Feathers Are Grown is a slap in the face, a belly laugh, a missing cuddle. Through bboyin and photography, this interactive performance installation explores a modern day version of the ancient myth of The Descent. With original soundscape by hiphop artist Twiggz, the intertwining archives of an adolescent and her mother are exposed in a brave psychological unravelling. “In the worlds before Monkey, primal chaos reigned. Heaven sought order, but the phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown.”

Fly No Filter dance theatre launched in 2015, to develop the touring work of hiphop arts organisation, SIN Cru. Under the artistic direction of writer-choreographer Lucy Crowe, the company makes work to capture, deconstruct moments, and test boundaries. To defy the concept of Impossible. Supported by Arts Council England, and developed at Sadlers Wells, Fly No Filter toured debut work, The Glorious throughout 2016 – 2018.

Emma Spearing
‘Some tribes believe that twins share one soul. In Southern Nigeria they call the first born twin the ‘Taiwo’ and they believe that the first born is sent out into the world to scout for them both.'

I am Taiwo is Emma's first solo show as both writer and performer. It is an autobiographical story about identity and what it means to be a twin who has lost her twin. It asks us to think about death, what it means to be alive and what we leave behind us. What stories will you leave behind? Who will be speaking your name and writing your story after you have gone? The show is like waking up in the middle of the night to hear a Kate Bush song gently whispering secrets to you.

I Am Taiwo takes a raw, honest look at death and grief and asks the question 'What does it mean to be the one who is left behind?'
