My brother came out after an episode of ‘The L Word’.
As the credits closed on Carmen going down on a leggy blonde in a nightclub, he said, “I’m like that. I do that.”
My mother and I looked at each other, confused.
“Cunnilingis?” I offered, and laughed.
“No!” He said, standing up and rolling up his blanket. “Gay. I do gay. I’m gay. I do gay sex.”

The Talk is a terribly undomesticated evening. It’s one account of what happens when you start talking about sex with your family: what ‘the talk’ is, and what it shouldn’t be.

Mish Grigor is one of Australia’s rising theatre stars. In her latest participatory work, the taboos of sex, relationships and family dynamics are laid bare. It’s explicit and unapologetic, yet also tender and personal in its investigation into uncharted territory. Based on real interviews with Grigor’s own family, The Talk is an awkwardly intimate and hilarious conversation with the artist about sex, sexuality and love. Bring your mum.

This project was originally commissioned for Field Theory’s, Site Is Set. Development supported by the Australia Council of the Arts with residencies at Campbelltown Arts Centre, The Joan and Metro Arts.

“It is funny, toe-curlingly frank, immensely insightful about family dynamics, and it makes you think about your own family and what you do and don’t talk about”
