Cambridge Youth Musical Theatre presents Father Frost
Akaky Akakakievich lives for his work as a perpetual titular councillor of the ninth grade in a nondescript government department; a lowly copying clerk who is in turn both teased and pitied by the other clerks, and ignored by everyone else.
When Akaky realises that his threadbare and tattered old overcoat no longer offers sufficient defence against the chill winds that accompany the Saint Petersburg winter, he determines to buy a new coat. But how is ever to find the one-hundred-and-fifty roubles needed to make such an extravagant purchase? And will his new coat bring him the happiness he dreams of?
The Overcoat is an original musical retelling Nikolai Gogol’s famous short-story. An overbearing landlady, a fanciful tailor, an uncompromising tailor’s wife, and a Very Important Person bring moments of madness into an otherwise quiet and colourless life.
The Overcoat is being performed by the senior members of Cambridge Youth Musical Theatre (16-22), and along with Father Frost is making up an exciting double-bill of new musicals based on wintry Russian stories.
