Toneelgroep Amsterdam
Kings of War
The Barbican (London)
22 April – 1 May 2016

Kings of War re-imagines Henry V, Henry 6 and Richard III as modern-day political leaders, all their fates unfolding in this single, radical adaptation over 4.5 hours. Pulling us behind the scenes into labyrinthine war rooms, the explosive play strikes a chord with global events we see on the news everyday. Toneelgroep Amsterdam have been regular visitors to London since 2009 with their contemporary deconstructions of classics such as Shakespeare’s Roman Tragedies or the films of Antonioni or Bergman. They are an extraordinary ensemble of largely (by UK standards) older performers under the directorship of Ivo van Hove who came to the attention of mainstream UK theatre commentators with his acclaimed take on Arthur Miller’s The View from the Bridge at the Young Vic (starring Mark Strong and Nicola Walker) in 2014.
