La Ribot: Another Distinguée

Date:Fri 19 & Sat 20 May
Price:£12.50 (£8 con)

La Ribot creates fascinating collections of live performance, installation, video, text and images that push the boundaries of choreography.

Another Distinguée comes to Cambridge Junction following a tour that has taken it to Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, and Geneva over the past few months.

The characteristic clarity of previous pieces now becomes a dark dream-like shadow play in which La Ribot’s body becomes a multiple presence that transforms into other possible bodies. Heroine, superheroes, warriors, mermaid.

The audience follow the shadowy presence of the three performers around the darkened space, as they invent and morph into new identities.

Joined by performers, Juan Loriente and Thami Manekehla, La Ribot’s collection of short performances and actions is the latest in the series of Distinguished Pieces, which she started creating 23 years ago.

About the artist

Born in Madrid, La Ribot lives and works in Geneva. Her practice has fundamentally changed the field of contemporary dance. Borrowing freely from the idioms of theatre, visual arts, performance and film, her work positions itself squarely at the point of friction between different artistic disciplines and fields. For La Ribot, dance is the starting point for an extensive experimentation process that is always rooted in the body’s many languages.

Her live performances have been presented at Tate Modern (London), Theatre de Ville, Centre Pompidou & Festival D’Automne (Paris), Reina So a Museum & Soledad Lorenzo Gallery (Madrid), Aichi Triennale (Nagoya, Japan), Fondation Serralves (Porto), Art Unlimited - Art Basel, the S.M.A.K. (Gant), Panorama Festival, (Rio de Janeiro), MUAC (Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City).

Her video works are part of collections at MUSAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León) the Artium (Centro-Museo de arte contemporáneo vasco), the FRAC (Regional Fund for Contemporary Art) Lorraine, La Panera (Lleida), the Fundación Cajasol (Seville) and La Casa Encendida (Madrid).

“As sumptuous in its aesthetics as it is eloquent in its physicality” Geneva Tribune

“[La Ribot] frequently changes our view of, the different contexts in which the body finds itself whether it be in a gallery or museum, on the stage, or on film.” Marcella Lista, writer and curator

“Has there ever been such a warmly dead-pan or self-mocking enterprising performer as La Ribot?” Donald Hutera, The Times

“La Ribot's metaphors are clever as well as enigmatic, throwing new light upon the connection between production and perception in art.” Gerald Siegmund, Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung
