Mirrorball
The proposal is to place a rotating mirrorball on the roof of The Junction. The work would act as a beacon, having its own sculptural, kinetic presence on the apex of the existing Junction building.
By day this would act as a conventional mirrorball, scattering light across the square and neighbouring buildings when sunny.
By night it would transform into a transmission tower, hosting a powerful videoprojection, with the faceted mirrorball projecting (and animating) parts of the video image throughout the square, resting on pavements, walls, people, benches, trees.
When video is projected onto a mirrorball multiple video images become scattered as mini circular projections across the surrounding space. Each of these projections takes on the appearance of a mini camera obscura, soft edged and circular each one shows a (very readable, visible) part of the video image.
Video source for the mirroball would include a live feed from the interior of the Junction. This could be live from the club nights, when they are happening with images from the dance floor and/or peripheral 'chillout' spaces, and also live feeds from other performances and events taking place at the Junction/CDC. The live video can be alternated with other content such as ballroom dancing, animated hands filmed against black backgrounds for an animated trompe l'oeil effect.
The speed and rotation of the mirroball will be responsive to the environment, controlled by sensors. For instance the mirrorball could be set to rotate faster when the square is empty and to slow down when it fills up - also depending on the (relative) position of people within the square via video recognition sensory devices.
