If you know want a career in the arts, but you don’t know where to start you should get along to The Junction’s Creative Careers Fair on Saturday 21 April to discover the wide range of opportunities possible for you.
For some people it’s about going to stage school, art college or furthering their academic career. Others may find alternative routes via contacts and work experience. Finding a great career in the arts is about who you know, what you know and above all else, thinking creatively. Find out about courses available in the region or have a chat with people working in the arts about how they got started and what the job is really like.
Catherine Moore, The Junction’s Theatre and Dance Development Manager explains the importance of these events: “Careers’ fairs normally concentrate on more traditional job paths such as finance, law or management. For a long time many people saw a career in the arts as being second best, a job in the arts was not considered to be a ‘real job’ by many people. Thankfully perceptions like this are changing, the creative industries now provide jobs for two million people in Britain and we want to make sure that young people in our region understand the facts and not the fiction about choosing a career in the arts”
Dancers, club promoters, script writers, theatre directors, PR people, graphic designers, film makers, actors, musicians, TV crew and performance technicians – just a few of the professionals you can talk to alongside the regional colleges, universities and arts organisations. There will also be industry related seminars and workshops you can take part in during the day.
Following the enormous success of last year’s Creative Careers’ Fair that saw over 350 young people receive one-to-one advice on education, training and jobs in the arts and creative industries, this year's event is even bigger.
Come and browse a buzzing marketplace full of creatives and get the inside story – you’re sure to make some fascinating discoveries.
This FREE event is on 21 April and runs from 12noon - 5pm.

Next week sees the filming of a music video by Cambridge collective , 'Merciless' a culturally diverse group of 17-21 year olds based at Romsey Mill who write, produce and perform their own songs. The group are consummate MC's and rappers and the film is being used as a platform for their talents.
Local film maker Sarah Gibson will film and direct whilst Banksy, a well known street dance choreographer and performer based at Swindon Dance, will be coming along to direct the choreography for the video. The group have never danced before and this is a fantastic opportunity to introduce young men, who might not have otherwise have had the opportunity nor inclination, to the dance form. Locations are in Cambridge city, Fen Ditton, Cherry Hinton and Barnwell - the areas where the group grew up. The main point of the video is for the young men to express their feelings about Cambridge - a city of opportunity for so many but a city of 'knock backs' for them.
We are very grateful to Cambridge Regional College for allowing us use of their music recording studios - free of charge - for this project. Romsey Mill and The Junction could not have delivered this project without their generous support.

The Junction strives to be a centre of excellence for art and youth culture. Each year thousands of young people come through the doors to have a good time in a venue they find safe and conducive to self-expression, creativity and informal learning. By keeping an eye on the national, regional and international picture of youth culture we try to respond to and encourage new trends in youth cultural activities.
We are always keen to work with partners in delivering projects and have worked with a broad range including the Youth Offending Team, CAPE (Cambridge Alternative Programme for Education), the Safer Futures Partnership, Eastern Touring Agency, Sin Cru, the Community Education and Youth Participation Departments of the City Council, Schools, Romsey Mill and others.
Over the year 2001/2002 The Junction involved 1,133 young people in youth arts activities. These ranged from club schools, MC workshops and Grafitti art workshops to inset sessions for teachers and training for workshop facilitators to post show discussions, a ‘Dancing in Hospitals’ project and a youth dance platform. In the year 2002/2003 numbers increased and we worked alongside 1600 young people and teachers of young people. All of these quality and accessible activities have been valuable opportunities for the participants taking part.
We are keen to provide learning opportunities for:
• Those at risk of social exclusion
• Those keen to develop their creative, technical and business skills
• Those interested in seeing new performance work
• Those keen to experiment creatively with new technology and media
• Those whose lives revolve around the club and music scene
|
The overall aim is to make our work accessible to all and to enable young people to have hands on experience of the creative process in action. We achieve this by keeping open lines of communication with young people to enable appropriate programmes to be presented and delivered. Further aims are:
• To develop creative and technical talents
• To build confidence and self-esteem
• To enable young people to develop entrepreneurial skills
• To encourage young people to explore available technologies
• To offer a platform for work
• To encourage creative exploration
• To develop interpersonal and social skills
• To enable young people to succeed
