The world's first digital ceramic mural which is installed on the front of the venue, was created during July and August 1995 as a homage to The Junction's audience, as these people play a major role in the way the venue programme is developed.
Photographer Katie Symes made 350 individual colour portraits of regular Junction audience members, which were then digitised and morphed into a single image and transferred to 3514 x 5cm square tiles, and made into a mural measuring 3m 38cm x 2m 67cm positioned on the outside wall of The Junction.
The mural places the audience directly at the forefront of attention. It is designed to give the impression that this is a place where they have a role, a sense of civic pride and "ownership".
The Digital Mural was opened on Thursday 31st July, 1997.
Researcher Clare Taylor, photographer Katie Symes, devised by Chris Dorley-Brown & Zbigniew Jaroc, architects Freeland, Rees - Roberts, Sponsored by Q103, funded by Eastern Arts Board, tiles donated by H & R Johnson of Stoke-on-Trent.
