Sonimation

Sonimation was a collaboration between Sonic Arts Network and Norwich School of Art and Design in partnership with the Digital Arts Network. The project aimed to build models of integrated artistic collaboration using digital tools, to create exciting new works that are accessible and enjoyable for audiences, and to produce performances of this work in four cinemas across the eastern region.

Sonimation commissioned and produced 6 highly innovative animated films that pushed forward the practice of visual and sonic composition. The emphasis of the project lies in the quality of each piece as an artwork, and on the 6 pieces together as models of collaborative practice in response to the synesthetic qualities of digital tools. Though distinct disciplines, the approach and vocabulary employed by sonic and visual artists are today very similar. New technological tools for working with sound have enabled the sonic artist to construct and edit their work as graphically as the visual artist and this common language proved to be the basis for exciting new collaborations which extend beyond traditional relationships and techniques.

Sonimation joined together 6 pairs of artists who collaborated in Norwich to produce new work selected from a nationwide campaign. Sonimation culminated in May 2001 with presentations, discussions and events in Cinema City, Norwich, Sherringham Little Theatre, The Film Theatre, Ipswich and Cambridge Arts Picture House.
