Fela Kuti World Celebration |
|
 |
On Mon 6 Sep 2004 BBC Radio 3 broadcast a show celebrating the work of late Nigerian bandleader Fela Kuti. Fela was highly politicised and leaves a legacy of raw trance-inducing funk with killer bass line hooks, loads of dance energy and a strong political message.
The full BBC programme plus photo galleries are available here.
Fela's son, Seun Kuti, will be performing a mix of his late father's classics when he brings his 18-piece band to The Junction on Wed 29 Sep 2004. This is definitely going to be one of the top world music events in Cambridge in 2004.
Interest in FELA KUTI is growing by the day. BRIAN ENO
says he has more records by Fela Kuti than any other
artist. The Barbican are currently dedicating an entire
season to the 'Black President'and BBC Radio 3 have
just done a show dedicated to the master's work.
If you thrive on non-stop dancing, the hookiest guitar
breaks and bass lines, plus big spectacle and
politicised energy, the sound of the late Fela Kuti
is a revelation. You can hear the influence on
TALKING HEADS's 'Remain in Light' album - it is all
about choppy funk guitar, circular bass grooves and
beyond that, punchy brass parts and no-nonsense
lyrics. Fela Kuti was protesting about the impact of
the IMF's stranglehold on Africa long before such
injustices registered on our radar.
This is hard, powerful afrofunk and Seun Kuti &
Egypt 80 will be playing many of the great band
leader's classics along with Seun's own groove
driven material when they perform at The Junction
on 29 Sep. Seun Kuti promises at least 18 musicians
and dancers and the same explosive dance grooves as his
late father. In fact Egypt 80 is the same band of
musicians who played with his father so, it goes
without saying that this is authentic Kuti.
And it gets better - If you book before 20
September you can claim an early bird discount
which will make tickets just £8.50. This represents
a massive £5 saving on the door price and is as much
as £11.50 cheaper than what you could be paying to
see the band at The Barbican in London.
