Baka Beyond’s music is steeped in joy and celebration. The band’s line-up includes four musicians from West Africa and four from Europe joining together to play the most original live world fusion sound around.
Strong African beats underpin Celtic and Gaelic melodies producing fast yet gentle rhythms that are totally infectious. This blend makes for a stunning fusion of influences. The musicianship and improvisational skills of the band, combines with a sensitivity learned from the Baka in the African rainforest.
The new live set, performed by some of the most exciting musicians from Europe and Africa, is bubbling over with joyous melodies, infectious rhythms and Denise Rowe's fiery dance, invigorated with fresh energy from her visit with Martin Cradick and Su Hart to the African rainforest. The band members spent two months immersed in Baka hunter gathering culture where music and dance is a daily necessity to life.
This injection of the spirit of the forest, mixed with a fantastic pan African rhythm section and the unique style of wild Breton fiddle player, Paddy Le Mercier, sets this tour up to be a sensational feast for the eyes and ears.
Baka Beyond are one of the few groups who ensure that they put as much back into the culture that inspires their music as they take out . The Baka are fairly compensated for their contributions to Baka Beyond’s music via the One Heart charitable organization. Helmed by Cradick and Hart, its goal is to help the Baka maintain their forest and lifestyle in a rapidly-changing world.
Their latest forest visit is the culmination of 12 years working with the Baka Hunter gatherers. At their request, royalties were used to build a (two storey) music performance space, the first of it's kind in the Cameroonian rainforest. Here Baka performances will not only help promote their culture, but also improve their low status in wider Cameroonian society.
