Following last autumn’s hilarious This Is Modern, comic dance duo Pete Shenton and Tom Roden present a new show that dares to delve into the philosophy of ideas and the origin of invention.
New Art Club’s inimitable blend of dance, theatre and comedy takes us back to basics; to dances with no meaning and stories without words; to sorrow, love and laughter. With dances that are full on and full off, we might yet realise that inspiration really can involve nothing more than breathing in.
‘A well deserved hit … their timing is excellent and their dead-pan delivery a treat’
Donald Hutera, Dance Europe
Why See?
Catherine Moore, The Junction's dance programmer explains...
"As The Junction’s dance programmer, I wanted to write to you personally to urge you to see a show I am very excited about! They have a funny name, and their subject matter is somewhat quirky, but I can assure you that this is what makes New Art Club so special.
Last year when New Art Club appeared at The Junction for the first time in the region, they were the indisputable hit of the season. In my seven years of programming at The Junction I had never before seen our dance audience rolling around and clutching their bellies in laughter-induced pain whilst watching perfectly executed dance! So, I have asked New Art Club back again. Which brings me onto their new show, which looks at what’s what with wattage.
Electricity is all around us and within us. Every movement, every thought and every emotion involves tiny electrical charges firing through our nervous system. It can also be used to make toast.
Following the highly acclaimed This Is Modern, New Art Club returns with their unique fusion of contemporary dance, physical theatre and stand-up comedy. The new show, The Electric Tales, offers a hilarious romp through the power of electricity and its connection to the human body. Amusing, informative and downright illuminating, New Art Club grapples with this mighty invisible force whilst trying to avoid any nasty shocks.
Tom Roden and Pete Shenton formed New Art Club in 2001 with the aim of creating dance-based work that is intelligent, funny and accessible and their warm and informal approach to performance has delighted both hardened and casual dance fans alike.
‘Roden and Shenton caper gleefully along the dividing line between lunacy and genius’
(The Herald)
‘Those who saw This Is Modern will not be disappointed with the new show… It’s fabulous to see that dance can be funny, thought provoking and thoroughly engaging. More please boys!’ (Paul Russ, Director, CambsDance)
I really hope you will join us for an excellent night out (it will be – I promise!).
Best wishes,
Catherine Moore
