Amplifier

Make Some Noise!
From October 2004, young people in Suffolk interested in a musical career will get all the advice and support they need with the launch of Amplifier. This major music development project will be delivered by The Junction and will provide a total of over 2000 workshops during its three year life span

Amplifier will not be holding ‘Pop Star’ auditions. The sessions will offer an insight into the workings of the business and will be run by specialists in their fields – those already making music their career. Speakers from national bodies such as Music Managers Forum and the Performing Rights Society will provide up-to-date, practical advise about this rapidly growing industry.

Amplifier’s comprehensive mix of workshops and events offer young musicians the chance to learn about all aspects of modern music. Designed to accommodate a range of abilities, from striking your first chord to live production, recording a demo to getting signed or starting your own record label. But it’s not just for musicians and DJs! Amplifier aims to help anyone wanting a career in music industry; other workshops include Event Management, Music Technology, Rock Journalism, Marketing and Promotion & Health and Safety.

Amplifier also aims to run showcase events where participants can show off their new skills and gain experience in a live environment.

This is the biggest project of its kind in the UK.
Richard Brown, Amplifier project Director commented:
“There is no other project offering the breath and depth of activities planned in the Amplifier project. The sheer scale of the project is itself unique in the UK. By the end of the three year project we hope that as many as 5000 young musicians would have benefited”.

'Amplifier' will provide a total of over 2000 workshops during its three year life span. Beginners and giggers alike will be able to take advantage of the package that will cater for all musicians aged 11-25. Professional instrument tuition, recording opportunities and music industry advice are just some of the benefits this challenging initiative promises to bring.

Editor's Notes:

Suffolk scooped five Brit Awards in 2004, with The Darkness and Busted getting recognition for their commercial success. Both these acts, however, had to move to London at an early stage in their careers to achieve that success. What about bands from Suffolk who can’t or don’t want to move to London?

Last year the UK’s music industry generated £3.4 billion, making it the third largest industry in the country. Over 130.000 people are employed and musicians are just the tip of the iceberg. For young people facing career choices the music industry is now recognised as being a realistic option for the future.
