Junction raises curtain for East to Edinburgh |
|
 |
On Wed 9 July The Junction hosted the regional launch of a major new initiative to promote East of England’s burgeoning theatre talent at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2003.
This Arts Council England, East initiative (delivered by The Junction and Colchester Arts Centre) is designed to take the region’s most promising new creative forces and promote them on this world renowned festival stage throughout August 2003.
Six performance companies and an artist in residence have been selected to demonstrate the depth, breadth and quality of the performance and new writing emerging from the region. Three of the companies are from Cambridge.
Companies selected are Tiebreak Theatre (Norwich), Menagerie Theatre Company
(Cambridge), Hoipolloi (Cambridge), 7K Extreme Theatre (St Albans),
Indefinite Articles (Cambridge), GAG Theatre Company (Colchester). Artist in residence (amazingly, the first time there has been an artist in residence
commission at the Fringe) is the irrepressible one man subversive think tank, Richard Dedomenici (Watford) who will undertake a feasibility study into the possibility of a terrorrist attack on the new Scottish Parliament building from Edinburgh Castle using the 15th Century cannon Mons Meg!
The regional launch saw performances by Menagerie, Tiebreak Theatre and 7K Extreme, plus a presentation by Richard Dedominici. Edinburgh Festival Fringe Director, Paul Gudgin, also voiced strong support for the initiative. "I am thrilled that Arts Council England has taken the initiative to support its home-grown talent at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. I am sure the effort will reap huge rewards in what can be an extremely productive but competitive environment. The Fringe applauds and supports this creative approach, and wish both Arts Council England and their performers all the very best for this year's Festival."
This is the first time that Arts Council England has supported a group of
companies from one region at the fringe in this way. East to Edinburgh is a unique project which has been facilitated by The Junction in Cambridge with
Colchester Arts Centre and has enabled the selected companies to go to the
Fringe considerably better resourced than would otherwise be possible.
Andrea Stark, Executive Director of Arts Council England, East commented "Nurturing the next generation of talent is hugely important to us. By
supporting these young companies, East to Edinburgh demonstrates our
region's wealth of creativity and places them centrally on the international
cultural map".
