Cambridgeshire County Youth Dance Company

Auditions for members of this prestigious company took place across the county in Cottenham, Witchford, St.Neots and the city with the final auditions taking place in Cambridge on Sunday 31st October.

Dance Junction is delighted to report that twenty two members now form this elite company from every part of Cambridgeshire. Ten members are from South Cambridgeshire, two from Huntingdonshire, three from East Cambridgeshire, three from the city and three from Fenland. The standard last year was incredible and former members Rebecca Abinari and Joanne Lamasion are currently training at Northern School of Contemporary Dance and Laban.

Maria Blundell will be choreographing their first piece before Christmas and the company will be performing it in assemblies across the region. Members are aged 14-17 and will attend company class every other Sunday creating and rehearsing in the afternoons. There are two male members this year, one of whom is 17 and hopes to get a place at London Contemporary Dance School in Sep 05.

G8Way News for Fenland

Maria Blundell is currently in the planning stages for the next Fenland short film to take place in Easter involving young people from various villages in Fenland.

The CCYDC company has a confirmed date of 6th December to perform at Neale Wade Community College, March at 1pm as part of their year 8 assembly.

Dance Junction is also working on initiating some creative, new technology based dance workshops for weekends in early 2005. There are a number of exciting artists we are investigating working with who will be able to bring accessible and transportable software to young people in the Fens. The aim is to demonstrate how artists are able to use new technology in performance and what opportunities it can offer.

School Tours

Dance Junction is currently scheduling a small schools tour for both CCYDC and Positive Action. The aim is that members of these groups will perform in school assemblies to both raise the profile of youth dance in the region and to try to encourage more young men and women to take an active interest in dance and for them to be made aware of the possibilities open to them. Each child will be presented with a small flier listing forthcoming opportunities to dance in their area. Members of the company will also make a short address to the assembly about how they got involved in dance and what it means to them. This is all about aspirations and raising expectations!

Positive Action

Dance Junction is offering FREE taster workshops for this young men's dance group until December for any interested schools. We have already worked with Comberton Village College and St Neots Community College and have sessions booked with Hinchingbrooke School and Hills Road Sixth Form College. In October, Jerwood Prize winning company New Art Club spent a day in residency with the Group at Comberton VC. The company will be returning there in the Spring to create a short curtain raiser for Positive Action to be performed ahead of their performance at The Junction in the Spring. These sessions are helping us find the right places to set up regular activities for Positive Action to Develop.

Duxford Remembrance Project

This is the second year of this successful collaboration between Dance Junction and Duxford Imperial War Museum. Schools spent a day at Duxford with Dance Development Artist Diccon Hogger working towards a short performance piece based on chosen ‘remembrance’ images. The creative product was then performed in the American War Museum. In addition, Cambridge Regional College performed their piece on Remembrance Sunday. This was a first for Cambridgeshire and next years dates have been arranged already so get your Schools involved!

Dance and Drama Project

This is the second year of this activity. We are collaborating with Public Arena to create two short performance works with Greenhedges Special School and Windmill Special School. South Cambridgeshire District Council are supporting this project through their Arts Development and Sport Development departments.

Integrated Dance

Dance Junction was invited to work with Netherhall School students and Windmill Special School pupils. These two groups are meeting every week and are in the process of creating a dance piece based around friendship.

Class Programme:

Swavesey Class (12+)
A street dance class every Tuesday. This group meet, learn and create funky new moves. Watch out as they will be performing for the first time in March 2005.

Scambs Collective (11+)
