Co-ordinated by The Junction and funded by Arts Council England East, MESH sets out to demonstrate that there is much more to arts in the East than pastel landscapes and watercolour skies. From Norwich to Southend, MESH includes a diverse series of ground-breaking demonstrations, events and talks at which the public can explore the work of digital arts in shopping centres, arts venues, community and commercial spaces. Many of the digital art installations are interactive and often the artists are on hand to answer questions.
MACB3TH Wed 16 April 8pm
The Junction, Cambridge. Tickets £8 (£5.50 concs) on 01223 511511
Audience participation takes on a new dimension when The Junction presents an interactive digital theatre production – a first for the venue. During Makb3th by Pirate Utopia, open source technology allows the audience to eavesdrop on the characters and receive individual text messages from them. An idealistic hacker living in a community of libertarian cypher-punks shares more than sleeplessness with Shakespeare’s Macbeth. And, unusually, the audience is actually asked to bring mobile phones into the performance and to plug into the action using the computers to hand.
MIXED VISION Fri 2 May 7-9pm
Hinchingbrook Performing Arts Centre, Huntingdon. Fully accessible venue, free admission. Enquiries 01954 718181
Cross Border Arts’ Mixed Vision demonstrates how digital technology can enhance the creation of performances involving disabled and able-bodied performers. Developed by 2 Bit TV, dancer Rachel O’Doherty and an integrated group of dancers, this open session introduces all-comers to video scratch mixing and the use of light beam triggers. Full disabled access is available for this event.
PRISM Thu 1 May 8pm
Chancellor Hall, Market Road, Chelmsford CM1 1XA
Tickets £7.50 (£5 concs) on 01245 606505
PRISM uses 3D animation driven by Hollywood-style motion capture technology to transform a performance by an international cast of dancers from Europe and Brazil.
DANcetech Thu 8 May 6- 9pm

Respond
Timed to complement MESH in Cambridge, Respond (2–5 April) welcomed the public to highly accessible works such as Time Machine by Masyuki Akamatsu of Japan. This interactive black box installation uses hi-end video wizardry to create the disorientating illusion of being shifted backwards in time. At Cambridge Drama Centre, visitors to Whisper tried on intelligent clothing which measures pulse rate and breathing then projects the results in a compelling and colourful light display around the participant. Eight venues presented work by international digital artists during Respond, including the city’s popular Grafton shopping centre.
